Information for travellers
Fines apply if you carry fruit and fruiting vegetables into the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone (FFEZ) in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
On-the-spot fines of up to $2500 apply to a member of the public found travelling into the Zone with fresh fruit and fruiting vegetables as this is one of the primary ways in which fruit fly can be introduced into regions that are otherwise fruit fly free.
- To be safe, do not bring fresh fruit or vegetables into the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone.
Approaches to the zone are clearly signposted, disposal bins are provided and random and permanent roadblocks operate in the zone. The personnel operating these roadblocks are empowered to issue fines to anyone caught bringing in prohibited foods.
Travellers also need to be aware that there are broader, state-wide restrictions applicable to transporting fresh fruit and vegetables into South Australia, even if entering from within the zone. Permanent roadblocks operate at various points on the South Australian border to check travellers’ vehicles.
